Product Description

Flick the Flash II – with either hand, mind you – and get 3.5” of AUS-8 stainless steel sliding from the handle so fast it makes the blade blur. Believe it. That’s thanks to SOG Assisted Technology (S.A.T.), a system of opposing high-tension springs that propels the blade open instantly once you give it a flick.

From the Manufacturer

The Flash II 3.5" Knife has got to be one of the coolest knives we’ve ever seen. Forget its wicked-quick blade access, that it handles like a race car on rails, or that it locks up like Alcatraz. It just looks and feels extraordinary. The Flash family of knives feature SOG Assisted Technology (S.A.T.), which employs a powerful piston lock that is easily released with a sliding button. The Flash I (1/2 serrated) comes with glass-reinforced Zytel handle and 1/2 serrated, black TiNi coated blade. All Flash knives come standard with SOG’s patent pending, reversible bayonet mounted clip that ensures the lowest, most discreet carry possible. We also had the foresight to incorporate an additional safety lock that gives added security when the blade is closed. Note that when the safety shows red... YOU ARE READY TO GO!

TEN YEAR REVIEW
Pictures were taken today. I ordered this knife from Amazon on July 22, 2011 and have carried it almost every day since. That's a pretty good endorsement in and of itself, as I am a power user. I can't begin to tell you how many miles of backcountry hiking, paddling, and camping this knife has seen in those 10 years. It's processed tons of food, cleaned fish, cut thousands of pieces of paracord, whittled hot dog sticks, feathersticks, you name it. Plus everyday use like breaking down cardboard boxes, cutting twine, wire insulation, gas lines, etc. Here are my thoughts after 10 years of heavy use:The overall durability of this knife is top notch. The AUS-8 Satin has held up wonderfully and it takes and retains an edge like the day it was made. There are some scratches on the blade, and even a little patina...just evidence of a well used knife. Deployment is still wonderfully fast, I've never once had the blade slip out of the locked open position, and the blade release still works like new. The handle texture has held up great and the pocket clip still maintains its original grip. That pocket clip was one of the main reasons I bought this knife in the first place...it's oriented correctly and secures the knife deep in the pocket. I can honestly say the longevity of this knife has far exceeded my expectations. I'm almost 50 years old, I've owned/lost/broke countless pocket knives, and am simply amazed at how this one has held up.I do have a couple minor gripes: This knife does have the SOG-typical blade play, both horizontal and vertical, that I don't much care for...but again, 10 years of heavy use and it hasn't caused an issue in functionality, so I can't really complain. But it is there. And the lock is completely pointless. As you can see from the pic, I have a small piece of electrical tape jammed in the lock to keep it in the unlocked position. That same piece of tape has been there for all 10 years and the blade has never accidentally opened in my pocket, even when scrambling through and low crawling under thick brush. If there was a lock-less version at a reduced price point I would buy it in a heartbeat.Just as side notes, I've only ever used this knife as a knife...it's never been a screwdriver or hammer or prybar. I also have small-medium size hands and the fit and feel are fantastic. That's it. It's not perfect, but it's pretty darned close. If you treat this knife right, it will give you many years of reliable service, mine is proof.

I'm certainly not a knife expert and the only other knife I carried extensively was a very affordable CRKT M16 (got it for 15 bucks on clearance) that I thought was pretty good. This is my second Flash II, I carried the TiNi version for over 3 years and here are my observations:

1- I don't even notice it's there in my pocket because it is very light, it rides low and discreet and yet it has a 3-1/2 inch blade. I like the security of having this knife on me all the time.

2- I use it quite often with the serrated edge even though knife enthusiasts prefer a straight edge. I've simply used the serrations where it was more efficient to cut, and I don't want to carry two different knives. I also have meat cutter experience so I don't have any issues sharpening it when needed.

3- Using the excellent pocket clip, the Flash II has never accidentally dropped out of my pocket as I was often losing my CRKT.

4- The handle has been criticized but I like it, it feels very secure in my hand with an aggressive finger guard, and I never felt my forefinger would accidentally slip onto the blade using it with force.

5- The blade lock has also been criticized but I really prefer it over the liner lock of my CRKT, the Flash II feels so much more secure and has been easier for me to use. This knife is also simple and quick to open single-handed using the thumb studs.

6- Over 3 years I've only needed to tighten the pocket clip once, everything else has been very solid, I was constantly putting super glue on the CRKT to keep screws from coming loose.

7- Sure I would like to own a Benchmade Griptillian ($100) with an AXIS lock, but I purchased this on Amazon for only $31 when SOG had a promotion.

The only criticism that I have is closing this knife single-handed quickly and safely, which takes little practice, effort, and caution because of the design and resistance of the assisted opening.

On my first Flash II I took it apart out of curiosity and the assisted opening spring popped out. I put it back together without the spring because I couldn't figure out how to place it back in. I thought I would miss the assisted opening, although between the two SOGs I prefer it without the spring since it is nearly as easy and quick to open yet much easier to close single-handed.

I just received this knife a couple of days ago, so far I really love it. I am not one to play around with my knives, I use them as tools, so I like to have practical sharp blades on hand when I need them. I have read many of the reviews prior to buying this one and I have to say I am quite pleased with what arrived.

First, the SOG assisted opening technology (SAT), I mentioned above I am not one really to play around with my knives, but I do find myself playing with the assisted opening, it is smooth, easy and ... well a lot of fun, one of my favorite features of the knife.

Second, the safety features, well placed easy to use, and I didn't have the problem of the safety lock engaging on its own in my pocket.

Third the knife itself feels sturdy for cutting, I don't know how solid it would be for lateral force, but hey it's a knife, if you need to pry something open get a screwdriver. The blade is sharp, I tried cutting nylon straps versus my kanetsune 11 layer damascus steel blade and both cut the straps like butter, no complaints there.

Fourth, the clip is nice, very tight fit so no fear of losing, and hides the knife low in pocket, out of sight.

So far I must say I love this knife and would recommend it. Given I do not put my knives through the rigors that some do, but for everyday uses around house, yard and dive gear/equipment, it works great.

SOG in general, tries to make all their EDC knives look like tactical weapons of mass destruction. Why? But the Flash II looks much more normal so I bought it. Out of the package it looked like cheap plastic, a little more thick and boxy than it should have been and the blade looked bland as a butter knife. But as I began carrying it, I realized that each morning unless I had a need for a specific knife, I grabbed this one. It's great. Sure it has cons:
1. It does look cheesy and boxy
2. The blade lacks cool graphics, no spiders or skulls or info about designer or steel and it is flat without fancy recurves or swedging.
3. The scales are Zytel (Kershaw does glass-reinforced nylon right: like the Free Fall, this just feels like plastic)
4. The assisted opening isn't as smooth as a Kershaw and the spring engages so early that you have to overcome it all the way until it is fully closed, making one handed closing difficult without some practice.
5.The handle is unlined and it will flex some.
6. No real jimping (there is handle jimping but it is so slight as to be non-existent)

But there are a bunch of pros:
1. It is a full bodied blade with a 3.5 inch cutting edge and assisted opening that weighs 3 ounces!! Yes, I said three oz.
2. The cheap looking Zytel is tough as nails and provides a very good grip while not wearing out the edge of your pocket.
3. The assisted opening engages early and just flings the blade out, fast and with no effort. Just a little nudge and it's out and the studs are easy to access and don't hurt your fingers/thumbs..
4. The bland looking blade is a full flat grind that is perfect for slicing and uber easy to resharpen. The grind is perfect and the blade was super sharp out of the box and stayed that way for a long time. AUS-8 done right.
5. The piston lock is flawless and easy to operate one handed and the blade locked up tight. (Although others have said they had some side to side blade play; I didn't)
6. There is a safety lock, I don't use it but it has never locked in my pocket (nor has the knife ever opened in my pocket) and I might use it if my knife is packed in airline luggage, or is going to be left out where kids, drunks or inexperienced co-workers can get to it. It's scary to think how light this would be without the lock.
7. The ergonomics are good with the rubbery feel of the scales and a very nice shape for the hand and the minimal handle jimping does give some added traction. I could see some hands not lining up with the two finger cut-outs but mine work fine.
8. There is an awesome deep carry clip. It curves over the knife "top" about 1/4 an inch above it so every bit of the knife disappears. "Is that a pen in your pocket?" It goes in and comes out smoothly. Even the cut outs on the clip probably reduce weight some.

All in all, this knife rocks. Its so lightweight you literally can't tell you are carrying it. The assist is fast and engages amazingly easy. It disappears in your pocket. The blade is big for the knife and it feels good in hand even though it is so light. It might be the perfect EDC. You will wind up reaching for it a lot more than you think you will when you first unbox it. Did I mention it is a full bodied blade with a 3.5 inch cutting edge and assisted opening that weighs 3 ounces!

--Allgemein--
