The Holosun red dot is not perfect, and I'll do a quick pros/cons rundown, but to me its important to keep the features and expectations of an item on par with its pricepoint. And in the case of this item, I would argue that this optic is by far one of the best deals on the market. As noted, I've put several hundred rounds through the optic, I've removed it and placed it back on the rail for various reasons, and through it all its held 100% zero. A quick disclaimer as well, I am by no stretch of the imagination "easy" on my guns or the accessories on them. The actual red dot reticle has not once failed to turn on by the time I've grabbed and raised the rifle (which I can promise I've tested countless times), and overall I'm impressed with the dot and the diode that projects it (see more in pros/cons).
The overall body of the optic is impressive as well. It feels very substantial and well assembled, and according to the manufacturer is waterproof up to 100 ft, although I haven't tested this beyond the optic getting rained on. The two mounts are included in the box, but truthfully are nothing too special. They definitely serve their purpose but overall feel like the cheapest thing about the optic. Unfortunately on the particular optic I bought (HS403A) the screw pattern is proprietary to Holosun and the optic won't work with any other brand of Aimpoint style mount. The two buttons located on the top of the red dot are very tactile and can easily be used with gloves, although with the auto awake feature I've only used them a handful of times.
Despite a lot of people complaining about the location of the battery on the optic, I won't even mention this because frankly I not only disagree, (A} where else was it supposed to go? B} with the battery life how often will you need to change it?) I find it to be a positive. After shooting this optic for several months I recently picked up a friend's rifle with an Aimpoint Micro attached. I looked through it and realized the brightness knob on the side of an Aimpoint is very distracting when shooting with both eyes open, and seems very clunky and unnecessary after shooting the more streamlined Holosun. I'm sure I'll make some enemies with that statement but frankly, I think Holosun has an overall design improvement that is very unique and functional in the "Aimpoint clone" circle.
There's a lot to like about the Holosun HS403A red dot. Like I said it's not perfect, but it shouldn't be for its price range. And let's face it- is there such a thing as a perfect optic? The Eotech and Aimpoint owners of the world may argue so (both of which I have or currently do own), and they certainly have valid points when it comes to quality control and real world usage. But its important to remember that any electronic optic WILL FAIL, its just a matter of how frequently and under what conditions. I'm not saying I would put my life on the line with the Holosun red dot (I'm also not saying I wouldn't), but for the average range user this optic will more than serve its purpose at a price that literally can't be beat by any other manufacturer.
PROS:
-Price
-Quality
-Limited lifetime warranty (according to manufacturer website)
- Battery Life (obviously I haven't personally tested this feature but I have no reason not to think I won't get years of life out of a battery, and frankly, if Holosun weren't confident in the battery life it would be a suicidal claim to make in my opinion.)
-Sight window is very clear and the diode "mound" barely appears in the sightline
-Turret caps double as windage adjusters, not typical for budget optics in my experience
CONS:
-Lack of mount compatibility on some models
-Mounts included are more than adequate but do have the cheapest feel of anything about the optic
-Overall dot is very crisp but I find it to be somewhat "starry" at certain times/brightness settings
-If I'm being picky, the QR bar code on the side is a little bit gimicky and unnecessary (when scanned it simply takes you to the website)
The 1st thing that jumped out to me was the outstanding battery life this red dot claims to have. You just don't find that in this price range. I have to admit that I haven't had enough time to test the 50,000 hour claim, but so far, so good.
The Holosun's body is very slim and low profile, and feels well made. The brightness level adjustments buttons are located on top of the red dot. Some may find this problematic as far as bumping them, but I have no issues to report.
The Holosun has a motion sensor, and turns on by itself when it is moved. I've never had a red dot with this feature before, and I kind of feel that it's a neat little feature. Keep in mind there is also an 8 hour shut off.
The glass is nice, and the red dot itself is nice and clear. There is somewhat of a blueish tint, but I've had no issues with it.
The mount is nothing special, and it stays in place and does its job. I haven't beat the hell out of this red dot, but it has been bumped around and has held zero fine.
Overall, for the price this is going for, it has quite a lot to offer. Time will tell, but it seems to be pretty rugged, and holding up well. This is a nice little budget optic. I'm very impressed.
PROS:
Incredibly Light Weight - It was mounted on the top of a bare bones AR in place of the carry handle and the weapon is obviously much lighter now. This was my customer's favorite part of the weapon system.
Install and Zero - Install was not unnecessarily difficult. In an age when companies are trying to make things cheaper they tend to skimp on materials and common sense. Not the case with Holosun. To zero the rifle, the caps are labeled for direction of turn and the top of the caps have protrusions used to move the turrets. No tools required!
AR Riser / Co Witness - My Holosun came mounted to the AR Riser which will allow a bottom third co-witness. If you are mounting this to another weapon system, it comes with a standard height mount! Nothing additional to buy!
Battery / Power System - Advertised 50,000 hours of on time. This translates in to 5.7 YEARS of battery ON time. This is an important baseline I will be coming back to. Now I had an Aimpoint H1 on the top of my patrol rifle which advertises 4 years of battery on time and I never turned it off and while it lasted 4 years, it did not have the power saving future of the Holosun I am about to address. Holosun has an auto off feature. You can select to have the red dot turn off after a period as short as an hour of the rifle not moving. Wouldn't it be frustrating to pick up the rifle thinking the sight is on and it automatically turned off? It turns back on with movement!!! Pick up the rifle and it turns back on before you can aim down sight. If this sight is going to sit on a weapon in a room ready for use the battery will auto turn off after an hour and be ready to rock when you grab it to use it. If it is bouncing around in the back of your truck, patrol car, etc., you still have over 5 years of battery as a baseline.
Dot / Clarity - It is bright and clear even in the Florida sun. Buttons are easy to use and change brightness based on conditions and lighting. Dot is visible at many different angles. What is behind the dot is where the bullet hits every time no matter what angle I look through the optic. The angle of the front lens is what allows this.
Value - At the current $169 price it is incredible value. In law enforcement I was fine with paying the price for Aimpoint as the agency only approved Aimpoint and Eotech. As a civilian I would recommend this over the Aimpoint based on price and usability.
CONS:
Battery Compartment - Changing and the initial install of the battery is more difficult than it should be. You have to take out a battery tray. This will happen so rarely through the life of the optic I will not drop the rating.
Availability - At times this optic is hard to find. People are learning about this optic quickly and you would be smart to get it while you can. Optics Planet occasionally has this on sale for about $30 cheaper.
