A: Thanks for reaching out Kelly! The 22 LR isn't exactly a powerful cartridge, but it has been used to kill grizzly bears in the past. With good aim I suspect you'll be able to put it to good work for personal protection as well.
Revolvers are the least picky firearms when it comes to ammo. As opposed to a semi-automatic which needs a certain amount of chamber pressure to load the next cartridge, a revolver loads its next round courtesy of the movement of your own finger. This means you can pretty much fire any 22 LR ammo you please through your Rough Rider.
I'm happy to say we have a good option for personal protection in stock: luckygunner.com/22-lr-38-grain-hp-eley-high-velocity-50-rounds. It is high velocity, so it's going to transfer about as much energy on impact as is possible for a 22 LR. It's also a hollow point bullet, which means it's going to expand as it penetrates soft tissue – thus creating a wider wound cavity and greater trauma. Eley is a highly respected 22 LR manufacturer, and this round has some pretty impressive performance enhancing features. Even if our inventory wasn't so limited, I'd recommend this ammo to you for personal protection in good confidence.
I must reiterate that your aim is crucial while using so weak a cartridge for personal protection. Without trying to sound goulish, I'd advise aiming for the heart only.
