Why the .308 Winchester Is Still the Hunting Workhorse

The short version: A column from Athlon Outdoors argues that, for all the new and wildcat cartridges on the shelf, the .308 Winchester is still the most practical workhorse a hunter can pick, more than 70 years after its debut.

Hunters love chasing the perfect cartridge, and the author admits the list of options gets silly fast. His point is that newer isn't automatically better. Since its 1952 launch, the .308 has earned a reputation for accuracy, dependability and strong ballistics, delivering plenty of energy without beating up the shooter. He says he'd take one after any game animal in North America.

The part that matters most for value-minded shooters is the ammo shelf. Because so many manufacturers load .308 in so many bullet weights, it's easy to try several factory loads and find one your rifle likes, without getting into handloading to tune accuracy. More supply and more competition usually mean better odds of finding a good price, too.

The author isn't calling it the best cartridge ever. He has hunted with most of the popular alternatives, including the 6.5 Creedmoor, which he used on a scimitar oryx and credits as a solid hunting round. His case is about versatility: the same .308 rifle can handle plains game in Africa or mule deer in Montana.

Key takeaways

• The .308 Winchester was introduced in 1952
• Known for accuracy, reliability and strong ballistic performance with manageable recoil
• Widely loaded by many ammo makers in a broad range of bullet weights
• The author would hunt any North American game with it
• The 6.5 Creedmoor gets credit as a capable alternative, but the author ranks the .308 as the better all-around workhorse
