Tuffy Universal Lockbox Tested in a 1993 Jeep Cherokee

The short version: Athlon Outdoors installed Tuffy's universal portable lockbox under a seat in a 1993 Jeep Cherokee and found it a simple, compact way to secure a handgun in a vehicle and carry it between locations.

Tuffy offers many vehicle-specific storage products, but the testers chose the universal model because its small footprint fits many spots: the bottom of a center console, a spare-tire well or under a seat. The system has two parts. A mounting sleeve bolts to the vehicle or another solid surface, and a welded steel box with a carry handle slides in and locks. Pull the box out and it stays locked, so you can carry it into a home or office, where an extra sleeve can be mounted.

The test vehicle was a former police 1993 Jeep Cherokee XJ, and the team chose a spot under a seat, where the box sat neatly in the seat well on the floorboard and out of view. Installation came down to clearing the space, measuring to confirm the fit, setting the box in place and securing it with the included lanyard. Mounting the sleeve requires drilling, and Grade 8 hardware comes in the box.

Inside, the box is carpet-lined, with optional pick-and-pluck foam. Security comes from a Pry-Guard lock with a 10-tumbler double-bitted key, and a pushbutton combination lock is available for keyless access. The reviewers' bottom line is that every vehicle should have some form of locked storage for a firearm.
