They've been around since the beginning of World War II, when they got their start making ammo for the Soviet military. Today, Barnaul is one of Russia's largest ammo makers and they produce a wide variety of cartridges for recreational and sporting use that are sold all over the world. Brown Bear is one of Barnaul's most popular brands and is some of the most affordable steel-cased 9mm ammo on the US market. Brown Bear ammo is all steel-cased with a unique brown hue that comes from the coat of lacquer that's added to help the cartridges feed better. Like most steel cases, it's Berdan primed and non-reloadable. But the cost savings should help to offset the disposable cases. This 9mm load features a 115 grain bullet with a full metal jacket. Despite some rumors, these bullet have a normal lead core, not a steel core. But the jacket is an alloy of copper and steel, so it will attract a magnet. Some ranges use the magnet test to prevent the use of steel core ammo that could damage targets and backstops. The bi-metal jacket really shouldn't hurt anything. But if your range does use the magnet test, you'll need to switch to some other ammo with a pure copper jacket. Recoil with Brown Bear was moderate for a 9mm. Case ejection seemed slightly less positive than some other brands. But despite that, we didn't have any feeding failures or other problems in the six firearms we used for the review. We shot a couple of groups from the bench at 15 yards using the Beretta 92. With that gun, our shots were going a little lower and left of the point of aim, but overall seemed consistent. Then we pushed the target back just a little to 20 yards and tried groups with the Beretta Storm carbine and were able to get an even better group. With ammo prices always on the rise, it looks like we're seeing a lot more these foreign steel case brands being offered at affordable prices. There's probably more accurate and reliable brass case ammo available. But for typical range use, Brown Bear is an excellent bargain.
