October 26, 2026

Prices checked October 26, 2026.

A good red dot no longer costs as much as the rifle it sits on. The seven optics below all come in under $300, and most are well under $200. We compared published specs (dot size, footprint, battery life, durability ratings) and current prices from authorized retailers to pick the best option for each type of shooter. This is a comparison guide, not a hands-on test: specs come from the manufacturers and retailer listings.

1. Holosun HS407C X2: Best pistol red dot overall

Holosun HS407C X2

The HS407C X2 is the open-reflex sight a lot of shooters put on their first optics-ready pistol, and the spec sheet explains why: a crisp 2 MOA dot, Holosun's Solar Failsafe backup, Shake Awake motion sensing, and an RMR footprint that fits a long list of slides. At under $200 it undercuts most of the big-name pistol optics by a wide margin.

2. Vortex SPARC AR: Best value AR-15 red dot

Vortex SPARC AR

The SPARC AR runs on a common AAA battery, ships with mounting hardware for AR height, and carries Vortex's well-known lifetime warranty. Normally a $200 optic, it was on sale at Palmetto State Armory for $79.99 when we checked, which makes it the easiest recommendation on this list for a new AR build.

  • Reticle: 2 MOA red dot
  • Mount: Picatinny (1913)
  • Battery: AAA, up to 50,000 hours
  • Brightness: 12 settings (10 daylight, 2 night vision)

3. Sig Sauer Romeo5 Gen II: Best budget rifle red dot

Sig Sauer Romeo5 Gen II

The Romeo5 earned its reputation as the go-to budget dot for carbines, and the Gen II keeps the formula: a compact 1x20mm tube, a 2 MOA dot, and Sig's motion-activated illumination so it's on when you pick the rifle up.

  • Reticle: 2 MOA red dot
  • Mount: Picatinny
  • Battery: AAA, up to 50,000 hours
  • Brightness: 12 settings (10 daylight, 2 night vision)
  • Water resistance: IPX7

4. Holosun HS403B: Best micro dot for the money

Holosun HS403B

The HS403B is a simple, compact tube-style micro dot that has been a budget favorite on ARs, shotguns and PCCs for years. It uses the common micro (T-1 pattern) footprint, so there's a huge selection of mounts available if you want a different height.

  • Reticle: 2 MOA red dot
  • Footprint: micro / T-1 pattern, lower 1/3 co-witness mount
  • Battery: CR2032
  • Brightness: 12 settings
  • Water resistance: IP67
  • Weight: 4.3 oz

5. Vortex Crossfire Red Dot: Best for shooters who want options in the box

Vortex Crossfire Red Dot

The Crossfire ships with both a low mount and a lower 1/3 co-witness mount, so one optic works on a rimfire, a shotgun or an AR. It also carries Vortex's lifetime warranty.

  • Reticle: 2 MOA red dot
  • Mounts: low and lower 1/3 co-witness included (T-1 pattern)
  • Battery: CR2032, up to 50,000 hours
  • Brightness: 9 daylight-bright settings
  • Weight: 5.3 oz

6. Holosun HS507C X2: Best pistol dot with a circle reticle

Holosun HS507C X2

Think of the HS507C X2 as the 407C with more options. It adds Holosun's multi-reticle system, so you can switch between a 2 MOA dot, a 32 MOA circle, or both. The circle-dot is fast to pick up for many shooters. It keeps the solar backup, Shake Awake and RMR footprint.

  • Reticle: 2 MOA dot, 32 MOA circle, or circle-dot
  • Footprint: RMR
  • Battery: CR1632, up to 50,000 hours, plus Solar Failsafe
  • Brightness: 12 settings
  • Water resistance: IP67

7. Sightmark Wolverine FSR: Best battery life

Sightmark Wolverine FSR

If you never want to think about batteries, the Wolverine FSR is the one. Sightmark rates it at up to 1,000,000 hours on a single AA battery on the lowest setting. It's a full-size, rifle-length sight, so it's heavier than the others here, but it mounts at absolute co-witness height for AR-15s.

  • Reticle: 2 MOA red dot
  • Mount: Picatinny, absolute co-witness height
  • Battery: AA, up to 1,000,000 hours on low
  • Water resistance: IP67
  • Weight: 12.3 oz

How to choose a red dot

Rifle sight or pistol sight?

Tube and full-size sights like the SPARC AR, Romeo5, Crossfire and Wolverine bolt to a Picatinny rail and are built for ARs, shotguns and carbines. Open-reflex sights like the HS407C X2 and HS507C X2 are small enough to sit on a pistol slide and attach with a footprint pattern instead of a rail.

Check the footprint before you buy

For pistols, the footprint has to match your slide or optic plate. The two Holosun pistol sights on this list use the RMR footprint, one of the most common cuts. For micro dots like the HS403B, the T-1 / micro pattern opens up hundreds of mount options.

Dot size

A 2 MOA dot covers about 2 inches at 100 yards. That's precise enough for most rifle work and still quick up close. A circle-dot reticle (HS507C X2) is easier to find quickly, especially on a pistol.

Battery and auto-on features

Motion-activated features (Holosun's Shake Awake, Sig's MOTAC) shut the sight down when it sits still and wake it when it moves. That's why many of these optics are rated in the tens of thousands of hours. A common battery size (AA or AAA) is easier to find in a pinch than a coin cell.

Co-witness height on an AR

"Absolute" co-witness puts the dot right on top of your iron sights. "Lower 1/3" sits it a little higher, so the irons sit in the bottom of the window. Neither is wrong; lower 1/3 gives a less cluttered view, absolute keeps your head lower on the stock.

FAQ

What is the best red dot under $200?

For a rifle, the Vortex SPARC AR (on sale for $79.99 when we checked) and the Sig Romeo5 Gen II are the easiest picks. For a pistol, the Holosun HS407C X2 at about $186 is hard to beat.

Can I put a rifle red dot on a pistol?

Not on the slide. Tube sights are too large and mount to a Picatinny rail. For a slide-mounted optic, choose an open-reflex sight with a footprint that matches your slide, like the HS407C X2.

Do red dots work with a magnifier?

Most full-size and tube red dots, including the SPARC AR, Romeo5 and Crossfire, can be paired with a flip-to-side magnifier. Check that the mount heights match.
